The mat and preserver are probably not original to the image.
They date to 1859-1860. The mat is a D&E n10.
Samuel L. Carleton was operating in Portland in 1845-1860, where he lived
in a castle.
The chair features in many of his images. There's a small reflecting
mirror taped to the back
of it, creating a small light effect in some images.
